Moving into their beautiful million pound home in the picturesque village of Ripton, Nancy and her daughter Lara look to have the perfect life.
But settling into a new community - with all the school gate politics, mum cliques and jealousy which abound - is never easy. And no one knows of the tragedy which has led Nancy and Lara to move here and start afresh.
In 'The Playground', Michelle Frances delivers a dark but delicious exploration of family and community politics. Affairs, corruption and schoolyard bullying, this story has it all... and much more.
This is a real easy read and page turner, with the rivalry between Nancy and local super-mum Imogen driving much of the action. The twists were not always particularly surprising, and I felt the middle occasionally lacked focus - going over ground which had already been sufficiently covered - but the ending contained more than enough drama to make up for it.
Like a dark version of BBC's Motherland, The Playground is a dark but fun read, which will leave you eyeing everyone with suspicion on uour next school run!
